Next Generation Networks (NGNs) and BT’s 21st Century Network (21CN) are revolutionising the way in which we all communicate.

The old digital/analogue public switched telephone network (PSTN) will become fully IP based by the middle of the second decade of the 21st century.

This new technology will break down many of the limiting barriers that the old PSTN suffered from:

Telephone Numbers can be ‘ported’ to an IP address meaning that a number can ring anywhere in the world.

Calls can be made between offices ‘on net’ that are free - worldwide.

Workers can be based at a different geographical location but still operate as part of a main system.

Centralised answering of calls can be provided.

Mobile telephones can become an ‘extension’ to a main office.
